White noise generator

Real noise, generated live in your browser. Pick a color, set the volume and the sleep timer, and get on with sleeping, studying or working.

How to use it well

For sleep: set the volume just loud enough to blur the sounds that usually wake you — no louder. A common mistake is running noise at high volume all night; masking works at surprisingly low levels. Use the timer if you only need help falling asleep, or let it run if you wake up during the night.

For focus: many people find white noise a bit harsh over long work sessions and prefer brown noise for its deeper, calmer texture — it has become the go-to "focus sound" in the ADHD community. Try both for twenty minutes each and keep whichever you stop noticing first: the best masking sound is the one your brain tunes out.

For screaming-toddler-on-the-plane situations: brown noise at moderate volume is your friend. So are these safety notes for using noise with babies.

Frequently asked questions

Is this white noise generator really free?

Yes. No ads, no account, no time limit. The noise is generated by your browser with the Web Audio API, so nothing is downloaded or streamed — it costs us almost nothing to run and it will stay free.

Can I leave it running all night?

Yes, as long as your device stays awake. Browsers pause audio when the phone locks, so for all-night use on a phone the practical option is an app with background audio, like our free Brown Noise Machine app for iOS.

Why generated noise instead of recordings?

Generated noise is mathematically consistent: no loop points, no compression artifacts, no birds suddenly chirping in minute 43 of a "10-hour rain" video. It is also a tiny fraction of the bandwidth — this page weighs less than a single second of streamed audio.

What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?

They differ in how energy is spread across frequencies. White noise is even everywhere and sounds bright. Pink noise reduces the highs and sounds like steady rain. Brown noise concentrates energy in the low end and sounds like a waterfall or an airplane cabin.

Need it with the screen off?

Browsers pause audio when your phone locks. Our free iOS app Brown Noise Machine plays brown, white and pink noise in the background, all night, with a proper sleep timer.
